Luxurious Velvet Medieval Banner with Coat of Arms and Fringes
Historical Context and Heraldic Symbolism
Banners of this cut, richly lined with fringes, were primarily a sign of high social status in the High and Late Middle Ages. They did not serve in the mud of the front lines but rather marked command posts, decorated tournament lists, or accompanied the nobility during festive processions. The horizontally positioned shield (often resembling a targe or pavise) bearing a yellow field with two blue chevrons and a red chief is a prime example of classic Western heraldry. The black field sown with small white crosses gives the entire composition depth and a slightly mystical or pious dimension, which was typical for noblemen with close ties to powerful knightly orders and the Church.
Mounting Method and Recommended Accessories
The top edge of the banner is equipped with a continuous sleeve (tunnel) designed for secure threading onto a horizontal or diagonal spar. The sleeve is always custom-sewn with absolute precision so that the banner holds firmly on the pole, does not wrinkle, and does not slip unnecessarily. For this reason, we kindly ask that you do not forget to specify the exact diameter of the pole on which the pennant will ultimately hang in your order notes. As an optimal accessory, we highly recommend acquiring a high-quality, smoothly sanded, and dark-stained wooden pole, which will enhance the luxurious appearance of this entire historical standard.
True Velvet Care and Maintenance Instructions
The banner is precisely sewn from genuine 100% cotton velvet, which excels in unmistakable colour saturation and a deep lustre. However, this exclusive material requires very careful and specific handling. Under no circumstances should you wash the banner in a washing machine, nor attempt to hand wash it. Contact with water would flatten the velvet pile, irreversibly damage the delicate fringes, and cause the fabric to shrink significantly. In case of light dusting, use only a soft clothes brush and carefully brush it in the direction of the nap. For heavier soiling, leave the maintenance exclusively to a professional dry cleaner. Never iron the velvet to avoid scorching the cotton fibres. We also strongly warn you against placing the standard in the immediate vicinity of an open fire, campfire, or burning torches – both the cotton material and the fringes are highly flammable.
