Medieval Linen Banner with Black Cross and Yellow Border
Historical Context and Knightly Orders
Although this banner is sometimes associated with the Order of Saint John (Hospitallers), from a strictly historical and heraldic perspective, the symbolism of a black cross on a white field belongs primarily to the Teutonic Order. The Hospitallers, on the other hand, traditionally used a white cross on a red or black background. However, in the Middle Ages, countless colour variations appeared among different commanderies and local military groupings. This specific banner features a shape resembling a drop or an elongated shield. The combination of black, white, and a distinct yellow border ensured excellent visibility on the chaotic medieval battlefield, facilitating quick orientation for heavy cavalry and infantry alike.
Mounting and Installation
The top edge of the banner is equipped with a practical sleeve (tunnel) for easy and secure suspension from a horizontal spar. To ensure that the pennant fits your equipment perfectly and the sleeve is neither too tight nor unnecessarily loose, the product is always tailored to your needs. Therefore, please do not forget to specify the exact diameter of the pole on which you plan to place the banner in your order notes. As an ideal accessory for this flag, we recommend acquiring a smoothly sanded, dark-stained wooden pole (please note that the pole shown in the photograph is not included in the delivery).
Linen Care and Maintenance Instructions
The banner is made of high-quality 100% natural linen, which requires a gentle approach to maintenance. We recommend washing the banner exclusively by hand in lukewarm water at a temperature up to 30 °C (86 °F). Completely avoid harsh chemical detergents and bleaches, which could weaken the fibers and ruin the colour saturation. Never dry the banner in a tumble dryer, as this could cause significant shrinkage and creasing. Ideally, dry it laid flat on an even surface or hanging freely. Ironing is possible at a higher temperature suitable for linen textiles, but ideally from the reverse side or through a clean, damp cloth.
