Medieval Linen Banner with Yellow Tree and Decorative Fringes

Heraldic Symbolism and Historical Significance

Square or slightly rectangular banners belonged primarily to experienced commanders and the higher nobility in the High Middle Ages – the so-called knights banneret, who gathered their own military contingents under this flag. The motif of a tree, branch, or uprooted stump has deep roots in heraldry. It symbolises life, indomitable growth, wisdom, and, above all, the firm, enduring connection of an ancient lineage with its estates and native soil. The combination of dark burgundy (purple) and bright yellow (gold) was among the highly prestigious and expensive coats of arms, as purple dyes were historically always a symbol of the highest majesty. Decorative fringes primarily adorned banners during tournaments and ceremonial occasions.

Mounting Method and Recommended Accessories

The top edge of the standard is equipped with a practical, continuous sleeve (tunnel) designed for easy yet secure threading onto a horizontal spar. The sleeve is always custom-sewn to exact measurements so that the banner sits perfectly on the pole, does not wrinkle, and does not look unsightly. For this reason, we kindly ask that you do not forget to specify the exact diameter of the pole on which the pennant will ultimately hang in your order notes. As an optimal accessory for this flag, we highly recommend acquiring a high-quality, smoothly sanded, and dark-stained wooden pole, which will enhance the overall luxurious appearance.

Linen Care and Maintenance Instructions

The banner is sewn from high-quality 100% natural linen and finished with delicate decorative fringes. This material requires gentler handling. We recommend washing the flag exclusively and carefully by hand in lukewarm water at a maximum temperature of 30 °C (86 °F). Completely avoid the use of bleaches and aggressive chemical cleaners, which would irreversibly damage the burgundy colour and destroy the fringes. Never dry the banner in a tumble dryer – the linen fibres would break, and the fabric would shrink. It is ideal to dry it laid flat on an even surface. You can carefully iron the linen surface at a higher temperature from the reverse side, but it is best to avoid ironing the fringes and the decorative tassel entirely.
