Sword class B
Historical Context and Typology
With its characteristic hilt design, particularly the massive pommel, this sword belongs to the Petersen typology as Type H or I. In the 8th to 10th centuries, these shapes were among the absolute most widespread forms of Viking swords and are still frequently found in archaeological excavations across Northern and Central Europe. The sword served primarily as a devastating cutting weapon, although the geometry of the tip also allowed for thrusting attacks. The dark lacquered finish of the crossguard and pommel gives the weapon an appropriately rugged, period-accurate appearance.
Practical Application and Variants
The weapon is manufactured in several specifications to exactly meet your needs. You can choose different blade finishes (polished, matte brushed, or high polish) and the method of pommel attachment (riveted or screwed).
- Blunt Variant (Class B): This version is designed for contact historical fencing. With an edge thickness of 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 in) and a safely rounded tip, it is ideal for Viking re-enactment, training historical combat techniques, or stage and film combat.
- Sharp Variant: Primarily intended as an exhibition decorative item, an accessory for a living history costume, or for cutting tests. For safety reasons, we strongly warn: the sharp variant is by no means intended for contact fencing or person-to-person duels! There is a high risk of severe injury.
Safety and Care for Your Historical Replica
The blade is made of excellent carbon spring steel, oil-hardened to a hardness of approximately 47 HRC. Please note that this material is not rust-proof. For a long lifespan, it is essential to thoroughly clean, dry, and preserve the blade with a suitable weapon oil after every use (even after merely touching it with a bare hand). During practical fencing with the blunt variant, we strongly recommend parrying strikes with the flat side of the blade, which minimizes edge wear and significantly extends the life of the weapon. Any use of the sword is entirely at your own risk, so always prioritize your safety and the safety of those around you. Always store the weapon safely out of reach of children.
