One-And-a-Half Syagrik Sword, Class B

Sword class B

Appearance and construction:

The sword has a long, straight, double-edged blade that tapers gently to a sharp point. It is made of high-quality CSN 14260 spring steel, which has been hardened to a hardness of about 47 HRC in oil. Please note that this steel is not corrosion resistant and requires regular maintenance. The cross guard is made of steel, straight, with arms sloping slightly towards the blade, and reaches a width of approx. 24 cm, so that it protects the hands well. The grip is long enough for a comfortable one- or two-handed grip and consists of wooden grip scales that are lined at the tang and wrapped tightly in cowhide and twisted wire for a secure hold. The hilt is topped by a steel pommel shaped like an incense burner and serves as a counterweight to the blade to improve the overall balance of the sword.

Historical classification:

In its overall shape, blade proportions, cross guard (similar to Oakeshott style 2) and pommel (similar to Oakeshott type T or V), the Syagrik sword resembles historical 15th century longswords/bastard swords, which could, for example, fall under Oakeshott's typology XVIIIa. It is a representative example of a European battle-sword from the period.

Variants and uses:

The sword can be ordered in a sharp variant for cutting tests or as an exhibition piece, or in a blunt variant (class B according to the fencing classification). The blunt version has a cutting edge thickness of 2-3 mm and a rounded tip, making it suitable for historical or stage fencing. You can use it as part of a costume for historical events, LARP, to practice fencing techniques or as an eye-catching home accessory.

Safety and care:

Remember that even the blunt version is a weapon and should be handled with extreme care and responsibility. Any activity with the sword is at your own risk.

  • Safety: Always keep the sword out of the reach of children. Use appropriate protective equipment when fencing. Never point the sword at people or animals, unless it is part of a supervised training session or a performance under the supervision of experienced individuals.
  • Use in swordplay: try to cover strikes with the flat of the blade, not the edge against the edge, to minimise risk of denting and damage to the blade. Swordplay is technically correct, without unnecessary or excessive force.
  • Maintenance. File off any nicks or sharp spots on the blade (caused by normal wear and tear) using a file or sandpaper. Since steel is not rust-proof, clean and preserve the blade with oil after each use to prevent corrosion. Over time, the cross guard or pommel may become loose; in this case, professional maintenance (re-soldering, re-riveting, tightening) should be carried out.

This is a Czech product. Although made with care, it belongs to class B, which offers no guarantee against blade breakage or other damage caused by use. Proven defects in materials are covered by the statutory two-year exchange period. With this sword, you get the authentic feel and look of a vintage weapon for your activities.
