Appearance and construction

The Valhalla sword has a straight, broad, double-edged blade with a clearly visible fuller in the middle, which tapers slightly towards the tip – a typical shape for early medieval swords, which were primarily designed for cutting. The blade is made of spring steel (ČSN 14260) and hardened in oil to approx. 47 HRC. The steel cross guard is simple, robust, slightly curved downwards (towards the hand) and about 12.5 cm wide. The handle, designed for one hand, consists of a steel core (blade tang) lined with wood and covered with high-quality cowhide. A spiral wire wrapping increases the grip. A characteristic element is the steel pommel, which corresponds to the Petersen typology H or I in its shape – it consists of a lower part (base) and a typically lobed upper part. The cross guards and pommel have a dark lacquered finish.

Historical classification

The appearance of this sword, especially the characteristic pommel, corresponds to Viking swords from the period between the 8th and 10th century. As mentioned earlier, its hilt can be classified as Petersen Type H or I. These types are among the most common hilt forms of Viking swords and are frequently found in archaeological contexts from this period. In general, Viking swords were effective slashing weapons, although some types were also suitable for thrusting.

Variants and uses

The Valhalla sword can be ordered in two variants:

  1. Sharp version: An excellent choice for collectors, as part of a living history costume or as an impressive decorative item.
  2. Blunt version (class B): With a 2-3 mm thick edge and a rounded tip, this version is designed for contact sword fighting in Viking re-enactment, for practising fighting techniques of the time, or for use in theatre and film.

Safety and care

When handling and using the sword, pay attention to safety and proper care.

  • Any use of the sword, especially contact sword fighting, is at your own risk.
  • Keep your sword safe and out of the reach of children.
  • The carbon steel blade CSN 14260 is not rust-resistant. After each use (even if you just touch it), it must be thoroughly cleaned, dried and preserved with a suitable oil to prevent corrosion.
  • When fencing, you should parry your blows with the flat of the blade to minimise edge wear and the risk of damage.
  • Regularly check the condition of the sword, especially the strength of the hilt (cross guard, pommel) and the integrity of the blade.

The Valhalla Viking sword is a robust and historically accurate replica that perfectly fulfils its purpose, whether as a reliable weapon for re-enactment battles or as an authentic piece for history enthusiasts. Its simple yet strong design and high-quality Czech workmanship are a guarantee of satisfaction.
