Appearance and Construction: Imposing Craftsmanship by Pavel Leier
The "Monarch" sword boasts a long, straight, double-edged blade, 90.5 cm (approx. 35.6 in) in length, made of high-quality ČSN 14260 spring steel, oil-hardened to approximately 47 HRC to ensure resilience and toughness – which is a quality standard for weapons by Pavel Leier. The blade tapers smoothly to the point and features a distinct 60 cm (approx. 23.6 in) long fuller. Unmistakable is the broad steel guard, 22 cm (approx. 8.7 in) long, whose strong arms characteristically curve significantly towards the blade and terminate in flattened ends. The long hilt, with a 21.5 cm (approx. 8.5 in) grip, provides comfortable space for both hands and is structurally composed of a steel tang, overlaid with wood and tightly wrapped with quality cowhide leather and a spiral wire wrap for a more secure grip. The ensemble is completed and balanced by a large, massive steel disc pommel (wheel pommel) with a diameter of 6 cm (approx. 2.4 in) and a typical raised central ring. The masterful workmanship of Pavel Leier is evident in every detail.
Historical Classification: A Great Sword of the High and Late Middle Ages
With its overall design – the long and relatively broad blade, the significantly curved guard, and the massive wheel pommel with a ring – the "Monarch" sword is reminiscent of great swords of war from the High to Late Middle Ages (approx. 13th to 15th centuries). The blade could be classified under Oakeshott's typology as Type XIIa, XIIIa, or possibly XXa, which were types of long and strong blades of their time. The markedly curved guard corresponds to Style 7, and the pommel with a ring to Type K. This combination of elements, meticulously crafted by Pavel Leier, conveys the impression of a powerful and respect-inspiring weapon of war.
Variants and Usage: From Collector's Item to Powerful HEMA Sword
You can order the "Monarch" sword in two variants:
- Sharp Variant: Suitable as an imposing collector's piece, a dominant feature in a historical interior, or as part of armour for ceremonial purposes.
- Blunt Variant (Class B): With an edge thickness of 2-3 mm and a rounded tip, this version is intended for contact historical fencing (HEMA) focused on power techniques with a longsword, for demanding re-enactment battles, and stage combat where a mighty weapon of a heavily armoured combatant needs to be depicted. With a weight of 2180 g (approx. 4.81 lbs) and a point of balance at 6.5 cm (approx. 2.6 in) from the guard, handling this sword requires considerable strength, experience, and mastered technique.
Safety Guidelines and Care for Your "Monarch" Hand-and-a-Half Sword
With such a large weapon, it is particularly important to pay attention to safety and maintenance.
- Any use of the sword is entirely at your own risk. The manufacturer is not liable for any damages or injuries.
- Store the sword safely and out of the reach of children.
- The blade made of ČSN 14260 carbon steel is not rust-resistant. After each use, clean it carefully, dry it, and conserve it (e.g., with oil) to prevent corrosion.
- When fencing, parry blows with the flat of the blade and avoid direct edge-on-edge impacts. Due to its weight, execute cuts in a controlled and deliberate manner.
- Before each use, carefully inspect the condition of the sword – the tightness of all components (blade, guard, pommel). Smooth out any nicks on the edge of the blunt blade resulting from use.
- With large and heavy swords, intensive use can lead to a gradual loosening of the hilt, which requires regular checks and, if loosened, professional maintenance.
The "Monarch" hand-and-a-half sword from Pavel Leier's workshop is a truly exceptional weapon for those who seek maximum historical authenticity of a great sword of war and are not daunted by its parameters. It is a robust piece of honest swordsmithing craft from an experienced blacksmith that will command respect on the training ground, on the battlefield, and in your collection.
