Viking sword Armod (Petersen type L) – Enter the world of the Norsemen!
Sword class B
Appearance and construction:
The Armod is a typical example of a Viking sword. Its total length is about 86 cm. The broad, straight blade, ground on both sides, is about 68 cm long and has a distinctive, broad and flat fuller that extends over most of its length. The blade tapers only slightly and has a rounded point, which is consistent with historical examples that were mainly intended for cutting.
Characteristic features include the short and solid steel guard, only about 7cm (approx. 2.8 inches) long, and especially the distinctive pommel. The grip, designed for a single hand, has a wooden core wrapped in high-quality cowhide and is reinforced with a spiral wire wrap for a secure hold. The sword is completed by the typical multi-lobed Viking pommel, consisting of a lower guard/pommel bar (similar to the crossguard) and the upper part with several lobes (the so-called "tea-cosy" shape). The overall appearance of the sword may have a slightly rugged, authentic feel. The weight of the sword is around 1.70 kg (approx. 3.75 lbs).
Historical classification:
This sword is explicitly classified as type L according to the recognised typology of Dr. Jan Petersen. Swords of this type are characterised by their specific, often five-lobed pommel and their straight or only slightly curved short cross guard. They mainly date from the 10th century, the height of the Viking Age. As the description says, the Viking swords were optimised for the stroke that enabled the effective fighting style of the warriors of that time.
Material and workmanship:
The blade is made of spring steel CSN 14260, which has been hardened in an oil bath to a hardness of approx. 47 HRC and then tempered for toughness and durability. Please note that this steel is not corrosion resistant and requires regular maintenance (cleaning and oil preservation) to prevent corrosion. The pommel and cross guard are also made of steel.
Variants and intended uses:
The Armod sword can be ordered in two variants:
- Sharp version: suitable for collectors, as an exhibit or for very experienced users to demonstrate slashing techniques (with extreme caution).
- Blunt version (class B). It has a reinforced blade edge (2-3 mm) and a rounded tip for safer contact. It is ideal for re-enacting Viking warriors, practicing historical fighting techniques (HEMA), LARP with Viking themes or for theatre and film purposes.
Safety and care
Even a replica sword is a weapon and requires responsible handling.
- You use it at your own risk. We are not responsible for any damage or injury.
- Technique and control: Fence carefully and without unnecessary force. Avoid blade-to-blade strikes. Check the condition of the sword regularly.
- Steel maintenance: Remember to clean and oil the blade regularly to protect it from corrosion.
- Wear and maintenance: Normal nicks are not a defect, but it is a good idea to smooth them out with a diamond file. Over time, loose parts can come loose, which should then be fixed.
- Keep the sword out of the reach of children!
Warranty:
We offer a standard two-year warranty for proven material defects. The warranty does not cover damage caused by use (normal wear and tear, breakage during fencing, etc.).
