One-and-a-half flame-bladed sword Lucis

Appearance and Classification:

The most striking feature of this sword is its blade. You can choose the flame blade either  “snake” or “sausage”, which is characteristic of certain late medieval and Renaissance swords, particularly the two-handed weapons of the Landsknechts (known as Flamberge or Flammberge). Here, however, it's applied to the more agile hand-and-a-half sword design. The blade is approximately 92 cm (around 36 inches) long and is crafted from reliable spring steel (ČSN 14260, similar to EN45 or 54SiCr6), hardened to about 47 HRC. Remember, this steel requires care as it is not stainless.

The sword's total length is about 122 cm (roughly 48 inches). The sturdy crossguard, approximately 24 cm (about 9.5 inches) wide, is slightly conical towards the centre, and its arms curve elegantly towards the blade. The faceted pommel, reminiscent of Oakeshott types like V or J1, counterbalances the long blade and completes the elaborate look of the hilt. The long grip, designed for one or two-handed use, features a wooden core wrapped in quality leather (shown in brown with decorative wire binding in the photo), ensuring a firm and comfortable hold.

While flame blades don't fall directly into the Oakeshott typology, which focuses on medieval swords, the hilt components (guard, pommel) clearly reference late medieval and Renaissance designs.

Variants and Specifications:

You have a choice of several variants:

  1. Flame Blade ("Snake" or "Sausage" style):
    • Blunt Version Only: Weighs approx. 2.40 kg (around 5.3 lbs). Features a 2-3mm thick edge and a rounded tip. Please Note: The flame blade cannot be ordered in a sharp version. Ideal for stage combat, LARP, or as a visually striking piece for reenactment characters (e.g., Landsknechts).

Use:

Depending on the variant chosen, you can use the Lucis sword for:

  • Historical fencing and reenactment (especially the blunt version; the flame blade suits Renaissance-era characters).
  • Stage combat and theatre (blunt version; the flame blade adds dramatic flair).
  • LARP (blunt version as an imposing weapon for fantasy characters).

Safety and Maintenance:

Don't forget that handling any sword requires responsibility:

  • Always handle the sword with the utmost care. You are solely responsible for any damage or injury resulting from its use.
  • When sparring, try to parry blows with the flat of the blade, not edge-on-edge. Use appropriate force and correct technique.
  • Inspect the sword before each use. Any nicks or sharp spots on the edge of the blunt blade (which is normal wear and tear) should be filed smooth.
  • Regularly clean and oil the blade to prevent rust, as it is not stainless steel.
  • The crossguard may become loose over time – if this happens, it needs repairing (re-peening, tightening the pommel). A temporary fix could be filling the gap with a tight wrapping (like fishing line).
  • Store the sword safely out of the reach of children.

The Lucis sword is a distinctive and functional weapon that is sure to attract attention. Whether you choose the classic straight blade or the striking flame-bladed option, you'll receive a reliable tool for your activities or an impressive piece for your collection.
