Single-Handed Hamond Sword
Appearance and construction: This sword impresses at first glance with its balanced proportions and solid workmanship. Its total length is approx. 102 cm, which makes it a one-handed weapon that is easy to handle.
- The blade: The blade, which is about 80 cm long, is made of high-quality spring steel ČSN 14260. It is hardened in an oil bath to a hardness of about 47 HRC (range 45-48 HRC), which gives it the necessary durability and flexibility for contact use. The blade is straight, double-edged and, as you can see from the photo, has a classic tapered shape. The finish of the blade is smooth and made of steel. Remember that this steel is not corrosion resistant and requires regular maintenance.
- Cross Guard: The steel cross guard is distinctive and measures approximately 21 cm in length. Its arms are gracefully curved towards the blade and feature flattened finials. This design corresponds with Oakeshottt's typology of Style 6, which was particularly popular from the late 13th to the 15th century. It provides good hand protection.
- Hilt: The hilt consists of a wooden core fitted into the blade handle and carefully wrapped in black, sturdy leather. This wrapping provides a secure and comfortable grip. Also visible in the photograph is a subtle twisted wire winding that enhances the grip.
- The pommel: The sword is fitted with a steel pommel. It is shaped like a faceted pointed stone, which not only balances the weapon but also completes its historical appearance.
Overall, the Hamond sword, with its combination of blade shape (reminiscent of a Type XII), style 6 cross guard and pommel, is reminiscent of typical knight swords from the High Middle Ages. The weight of the sword is about 1.80 kg.
Possible uses:
The Hamond sword is suitable for a variety of uses due to its construction and material:
- Historical fencing: If you order the version for historical or stage fencing, the sword has a reinforced edge (2-3 mm) and a rounded tip. In this version, it is suitable for training and contact fencing in accordance with the safety rules of the group or event.
- Reenactment and costumes. You can wear it at historical festivals, battles or LARP events (if the rules allow metal weapons).
- Collecting and decoration: Even as a static exhibit, this sword is an impressive piece in a collection or an original room decoration with a historical touch.
- Training: It can be used for individual practice of sword fighting techniques (strokes, covering, stances), although it is not primarily intended for cutting tests.
Safe use policy:
When handling the Hamond Sword, always pay attention to your safety and the safety of those around you:
- It is at your own risk: All activities with the sword are at your own risk. Neither the manufacturer nor the seller is responsible for injuries or damages.
- Never against people or animals: Unless the sword has been specifically modified for safe fencing (dull edge, rounded tip) and you are using it in an organised training session with protective equipment and under supervision, you must never direct it against other people or animals or handle it in such a way that it could be used.
- Carefully inspect the sword before each use. Check the durability of the cross guard and pommel. File down any sharp notches or dents in the blade that result from normal wear (e.g. with a diamond file or sandpaper) to prevent snagging or further damage.
- Proper Technique: In the art of fencing, try to guide the blows with the flat side of the blade and not with the cutting edge against the blade to minimise damage. Use your swords in a technically correct way and without unnecessary force.
- Care: Since the blade is not stainless, you should clean and oil it regularly to prevent corrosion.
- Storage: Keep the sword in a safe place, out of reach of children.
- Wear and tear: Expect that even with proper use, signs of wear and tear (cracks, loose cross guards) may occur. This is a natural consequence of use. A loose cross guard must be repaired (re-coiling, tightening, repairing the joint).
The Hamond one-handed sword is a high-quality Czech product that, with proper use and care, can be a reliable companion for your historical activities or an impressive addition to your collection.
