Hourglass Plate Gauntlets, 1.6 mm steel

Detailed Product Description

These knight's gauntlets are carefully handcrafted based on historical patterns. The back of the hand is protected by a single piece of steel plate that flows seamlessly into a wide, conical wrist guard. It is this shape, reminiscent of an hourglass silhouette, that gave the gauntlets their name. Inside, you will find a stitched-in leather strap with a brass buckle for a secure and firm fit on your hand. All parts are joined with sturdy steel rivets, emphasising the historical authenticity and quality of the craftsmanship.

Important notice: The leather gloves shown in some of the photographs are not included with the delivery. For maximum comfort and protection, we recommend wearing your own padded or thick leather gloves underneath these plate gauntlets.

Historical Context and Inspiration

Hourglass gauntlets emerged during the 14th century in response to the need for better protection for the hands and wrists, which were vulnerable in battle. They replaced older mail or scale mittens and quickly gained popularity across Europe. Their distinctive design with a flared cuff not only protected the wrist but also effectively deflected cuts and blows aimed at the forearm. An interesting fact is that original examples of these gauntlets were often decorated with brass elements and engravings, which signified the status and wealth of their owner. The discovery of such a gauntlet from the Battle of Visby (1361) is one of the most famous archaeological proofs of their widespread use.

Instructions for Use and Care

Before putting them on, wear your inner gloves (padded or leather). Then, slide your hand into the plate gauntlet and tighten the internal leather strap so that the gauntlet fits securely but does not hinder movement. As the gauntlets are made from mild steel, which is prone to rust, proper care is essential.

  • Dry them thoroughly after each use, including the inside.
  • Regularly apply a thin layer of oil (e.g., Ballistol or WD-40) to protect them from rust.
  • Store them in a dry, well-ventilated environment.
  • Never leave the gauntlets in a damp bag or on wet grass.

Disclaimer: This is a replica of historical armour and is not certified as personal protective equipment. It is not intended for modern full-contact combat sports such as buhurt (HMB, Battle of the Nations), and using it in such activities is at your own risk.
