Blue Infantry Gambeson (12th–13th Century)

Smart Design for the Battlefield

The gambeson features vertical quilting, which is typical for this period. A specific and highly practical feature is the high collar with side buttoning. This design isn't just for show – it prevents buttons from digging into your throat when wearing a mail coif or helmet over the gambeson. For maximum freedom of movement when running or lunging, the bottom hem features slits in the front and back (below waist level).

Material and Comfort

The entire gambeson – outer shell, lining, and internal padding – is made of 100% cotton. The outer fabric has a texture that mimics linen, giving you a historically accurate appearance with the softness and breathability of cotton. The material thickness is approximately 6 mm (approx. 0.24 inches). This is a lighter padding that prevents overheating and allows you to wear additional armour layers without feeling bulky.

Size Chart

Measurements are taken from the garment itself. Allow some room for undergarments and movement.

Gambeson Care

To preserve the shape and color:

  • Machine wash in cold water (max. 30°C / 85°F) on a gentle cycle.
  • Treat stubborn stains (e.g., rust or oil) by hand with a soft brush.
  • Do not tumble dry; allow to air dry naturally.

Recommended Accessories

This gambeson pairs perfectly with a mail coif and a simple leather belt. For a 13th-century foot soldier, a kettle hat helmet is an excellent addition.
