Historical Context and Proper Use of the Garment

This type of garment draws inspiration from the padded doublets (so-called gambesons or jacks) of the 14th and 15th centuries, when armourers began to pay much more attention to a tailored cut following the lines of the body. Although women historically did not normally fight in heavy battles wearing this specific attire, this product is a perfect modern adaptation of historical principles for today's re-enactment and LARP. The gambeson was traditionally worn as the primary protection of poorer infantry, or as a shock-absorbing under-layer beneath chainmail or plate armour. To achieve maximum comfort whilst wearing it, always don a breathable linen or cotton under-tunic beneath it, which will effectively absorb sweat.

Material and Recommended Care

The product is manufactured from 100% heavy cotton canvas with internal padding, which ensures excellent abrasion resistance whilst retaining the acceptable breathability of a natural material. For this gambeson to serve you well and for a long time, it is essential to care for it properly. Wash it exclusively by hand or in a washing machine on a very gentle cycle at a maximum temperature of 30 °C. Never dry it in a tumble dryer, as the material could shrink and the leather straps could be damaged. Do not iron over the leather fastenings and buckles. The under-tunic and trousers shown in the photographs are not included in the delivery.

Safety and Usage Limitations

This gambeson is ideal for light stage fencing, HEMA training, boffer fighting, and cosplay. From a safety perspective, we must warn you that it is not certified protective armour suitable for extreme full-contact power combat (e.g., buhurt or Battle of the Nations). Never use this vest as protection against actual sharp weapons, as it could be pierced and cause you serious injury.
