The distinct shape, resembling the ancient Phrygian cap with its forward-curved apex, offers excellent deflection properties against overhead strikes. Phrygischer Battle-Ready Helmet with Nasal (12th Century) – 2mm Steel

Unlike standard costume replicas, this helmet is made for battle. The bowl is forged from 2 mm (14 gauge) steel, meeting the standard requirements for heavy combat. However, what takes it to the next level is the massive nasal guard with a thickness of 3 mm. This provides extreme facial protection against direct hits commonly encountered in Buhurt. The helmet comes equipped with an adjustable fabric liner and a sturdy leather chin strap, ensuring a secure and comfortable fit.

This helmet is designed for:

  • Buhurt and HMB (Historical Medieval Battle): Due to the material thickness, it meets the demands of full-contact sports (always check the specific regulations of your organization).
  • Heavy historical fencing and 12th-century battle re-enactment.
  • Portraying Crusaders, Norman knights, or warriors from Southern Italy and Sicily.

Historical Context

The shape of this helmet is inspired by the ancient Phrygian cap but saw a renaissance in metal form during the 12th century, likely influenced by contact with Byzantium and the East during the Crusades. This type of helmet was favoured for its ability to deflect vertical strikes off the curved apex rather than absorbing the full force. It was worn by both knights and professional infantry.

Size Chart

The measurements correspond to the head circumference. Thanks to the padding, the helmet adapts slightly to fit.

Size Head Circumference
M 60 – 61 cm (approx. 23.6 – 24 inches)
L 63 – 64 cm (approx. 24.8 – 25.2 inches)

Care Instructions

The helmet is made of carbon steel without a stainless coating, so it requires maintenance:

  • Wipe it dry after every training session or battle to remove sweat.
  • Regularly oil the surface (e.g., with WD-40 or gun oil) to prevent rust.
  • Store it in a dry place.

My Tip for You: For Buhurt and full-contact use, I recommend combining this helmet with a high-quality mail coif with extra padding to ensure 100% protection for your neck and collarbones.
