Conical Nasal Helmet – 13th Century (Maciejowski Style)
1xAre you looking for a helmet that transports you to the era of the Crusades or the high medieval battlefields? This conical helmet with a sturdy nasal guard is an icon of European warfare from the 11th to the 13th century. Often colloquially called a "Norman helmet," its use extended far beyond William the Conqueror. This specific model, inspired by illustrations in the famous Maciejowski Bible, is an excellent choice for 13th-century re-enactment. It offers a great balance between historical appearance, functional protection, and affordability. Its shape is designed to deflect blows downwards, while the prominent nasal bar gives you the facial protection you need in combat. Further product information ...

Conical Nasal Helmet – 13th Century (Maciejowski Style)
The design of this helmet is based on the proven conical shape, engineered to cause swords and axes to glance off, thereby reducing the impact energy on the skull. The helmet bowl is made of 1.6 mm (approx. 16 gauge) mild steel. Constructed from two halves welded together (making it more affordable than a one-piece forging), it features a polished finish. The dominant feature is the nasal guard, which is made of thicker 2.0 mm steel for enhanced durability, protecting your nose and the center of your face.
This helmet is ideal for:
- Re-enactment of battles from the 11th to 13th centuries.
- Costumes for Crusaders, infantry, or early knights in LARP.
- Film and theatre extras.
Historical Context
Conical nasal helmets gradually replaced the older spangenhelms. They were so effective that they remained in service for centuries. While often mislabelled as purely "Norman," they were worn by warriors across Europe. By the 12th century, cylindrical (great) helms began to appear, but the conical shape remained popular due to its lighter weight, better ventilation, and visibility, especially among infantry and knights of lesser means. This specific type is widely seen in the Maciejowski Bible (c. 1250), making it an authentic accessory for that period.
Safety Warning: This is a quality replica by Marshal Historical. However, it is not certified for full-contact heavy combat (Buhurt, HMB). It is perfectly suitable for standard historical fencing, stage combat, and re-enactment. We strongly recommend wearing a padded arming cap or a mail coif underneath for shock absorption.

Care Instructions
The helmet is made of carbon steel, which is prone to rust if left untreated. To keep it looking new:
- Regularly apply mineral or synthetic oil (e.g., WD-40, gun oil) to the surface.
- Wipe it dry after every use; sweat is very corrosive.
- Store in a dry place.
My Tip for You: Want to look like a true heavy infantryman of the 13th century? Pair this helmet with a chainmail coif. It covers the neck and shoulders and forms a perfect defensive unit with the nasal guard.
