Viking Sword with Five-Lobed Pommel and Leather Scabbard

Construction and Historical Context

The sword is inspired by Jan Petersen's typology, specifically swords with lobed pommels (resembling Type R or S), which were widespread in the Viking world. The blade is hand-forged from steel and features a distinct wide fuller (blood groove). This groove is not intended to channel blood, as myths often suggest, but serves to lighten the blade while maintaining its rigidity. This makes the sword more manageable and faster.

The crossguard is short and thick, typical of the Early Middle Ages. The grip is wrapped in black leather and features a central riser for a more secure hold. The massive pommel not only completes the weapon's aesthetic but also acts as a counterweight, shifting the balance point closer to the hand. The tang passes through the grip and is peened at the end of the pommel, ensuring the strength of the entire construction. The supplied leather scabbard is made of sturdy cowhide and features an integrated frog (loop) for easy wearing.

Important Usage Warning

Although the manufacturer declares this sword as suitable for fencing, due to warranty conditions, we sell it in the decorative replica category. We do not provide a warranty against blade breakage or loosening of the crossguard caused by rough handling or full-contact combat. If you decide to use the sword for training or stage combat, you do so at your own risk. However, thanks to the blunt striking edge (approx. 2 mm / 0.08 in) and the rounded tip, the risk of injury is minimized with proper handling.

Sword Care

To ensure this piece serves you for many years without degrading due to rust, you need to care for it:

  • Since the steel is susceptible to corrosion, always store the sword in a dry place.
  • Do not leave the sword stored in the leather scabbard for long periods, as leather can absorb atmospheric moisture.
  • After every use or contact with bare hands, wipe the blade and treat it with preservation oil (e.g., WD-40 or specific gun oil).
