Anglo-Saxon Fetter Lane Sword of King Offa, 8th Century

Historical Origin and Legendary Craftsmanship

The historical inspiration for this single-handed sword stems from a late 8th-century gilded silver pommel fragment discovered during construction work on Fetter Lane, London, in 1893. Today, this iconic original resides in the British Museum. Because the original blade did not survive, this reconstruction pairs the magnificent hilt with a double-edged early medieval blade (resembling late Anglo-Saxon styles, close to Petersen Type L typology).

We created this sword in honor of King Offa of Mercia, one of the most powerful Anglo-Saxon rulers of the 8th century, who controlled London during this era. Renowned for his monumental earthworks and patronage of skilled artisans, Offa surrounded himself with elite warriors. This weapon represents the status, wealth, and martial pride of high-ranking Anglo-Saxon noblemen from his realm.

Detailed Features of Blade, Hilt, and Scabbard

The cast brass hilt features a tinned finish that grants it a brilliant silver appearance. Constructed from multiple riveted components matching the museum artifact, both the pommel and crossguard feature diagonal fluting with un-tinned brass accents. The grip is adorned with complex filigree carving: one side displays intertwining serpents, while the other features organic foliage scrollwork and an eagle-like creature.

The unsharpened blade is forged from heat-treated EN45 spring steel and features a broad fuller running down most of its length. The sword comes complete with a brown wooden scabbard wrapped in genuine leather, featuring a wooden belt loop (fitting belts up to 5 cm / 2 in wide) and tinned brass fittings.

For safety reasons, this sword is designed strictly as a decorative item and prop. It is not suitable for practical fencing, HEMA sparring, stage combat, or cutting tests.

EN45 carbon steel is not rust-proof. Proper care is essential to preserve the blade and hilt over time:

• Oil Protection: Regularly coat the blade and metallic fittings with protective oil (such as Ballistol universal oil).
• Storage: Keep the weapon in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage inside the leather scabbard, as leather can trap humidity.
• Safety Warning: Do not strike hard objects, armor, or perform combat sparring with this sword. Unintended impacts may damage the construction or cause injuries.
