Viking Fencing Sword Gottfried Class C
History and Origins of the Gottfried Sword
The historical design of this sword draws inspiration from 9th-century Norse artifacts from the height of the Viking expansion across Europe. According to Petersen's Viking sword typology, this hilt corresponds to Type X (or Type H), which was characteristic of early medieval Carolingian and Scandinavian blades. A sword like this served its owner as a primary symbol of status and a feared single-handed weapon when paired with a round wooden shield.
The blade features a wide fuller that reduces overall weight while preserving structural rigidity and flex. Built with a full tang, the blade passes completely through the leather-wrapped wooden grip and is securely peened over the three-lobed mild steel pommel.
The Significance of Gottfried
This sword is named Gottfried in honor of the famous 9th-century Viking king and military leader Gottfried (Gudfred), who fearlessly resisted the expansion of Charlemagne's Frankish Empire. The name symbolizes the resolve of Norse warriors defending their lands and heritage, reflecting the steadfast character of early medieval rulers.

1090 high carbon steel is not stainless and requires regular maintenance. After every combat demonstration or practice session, clean moisture from the blade and apply a light coat of protective oil (such as Ballistol). Treat the leather handle with leather conditioner.
Safety Warning and Wear Notice: Rated as Class C (Stage Fencing), this blade features a blunt edge (2.5–3 mm) and a rounded safety tip. It is suitable for light stage fencing, public demonstrations, and reenactment. It is strictly NOT intended for full-contact armored combat (buhurt) or heavy HEMA sparring without adequate personal protective equipment. Striking blade-to-blade with excessive force can cause notches or fractures. Please note that a fencing sword is a consumable item subject to wear over time.
