Historical Origin and Significance of the Suontaka Name
The name of this weapon refers to the Finnish locality of Suontaka (in the Tyrväntö region), where a famous grave dating to around 1100 AD was discovered in 1968. The archaeological find caused a sensation: a high-status woman was buried in rich traditional dress with jewelry and two swords, the most spectacular of which was this copper-hilted sword. Although the grave itself was sealed around 1100 AD, the typology of the sword, its hilt decoration, and blade shape clearly date to the height of the Viking Age in the mid-10th century.
This sword represents the pinnacle of early medieval bladesmithing and artistic craftsmanship. The broad-fullered blade aligns with Oakeshott Type X, while the hilt belongs to the classic Petersen Type Z classification for Viking Age swords. The elaborate copper-plated hilt adorned with beast motifs in the Ringerike or Mammen artistic style highlights that the original owner belonged to the highest social elite.
