In popular culture, these two swords are often confused, but in many versions of the Arthurian legends, they are two different weapons. The "Sword in the Stone" proved Arthur's right to the throne but often broke in battle. Excalibur (Welsh Caledfwlch, Latin Caliburnus) was later received by Arthur from the Lady of the Lake.
