As this piece is produced exclusively to your measurements, we guarantee a bespoke fit that facilitates a full range of motion during combat or camp life.

The detachable sleeves offer excellent versatility—during sweltering summer days or non-combatant activities, you can easily remove the sleeves and wear the garment as a vest. The tailored fit is specifically designed not to hinder your arms, which you will find invaluable for HEMA fencing or archery.

During the 14th and 15th centuries, the gambeson was the foundational element of every warrior's protection. While wealthy knights wore it as an arming doublet beneath their harness, for poorer infantrymen, archers, or town militias, the gambeson was often their primary body protection. Interestingly, historical records—such as the Ordinances of Charles the Bold—frequently specified the exact number of linen layers required to ensure resistance against arrows and thrusts. This replica, with its 12 layers, faithfully adheres to these historical military regulations. Raw linen was chosen intentionally; its fibres are extremely tough and possess a natural ability to wick away moisture, making this a surprisingly comfortable piece of kit even during heavy exertion.

Maintenance and Linen Care

As this garment is made from 100% raw, natural linen, we recommend treating it with the respect such a material deserves:

• Washing: We recommend hand washing only in lukewarm water with a mild detergent. Machine washing risks shrinking the linen and damaging the hand-sewn eyelets.
• Drying: Dry flat in the shade. Never use a tumble dryer, as this can lead to irreversible distortion of the fit.
• Ironing: Linen is best ironed while slightly damp using a high heat setting.

While this 12-layer gambeson provides significant passive protection, please remember it is not a certified safety product for full-contact competitive combat (such as Buhurt). For increased safety during sparring, we recommend combining this gambeson with further armour components like a chainmail voiders. Never attempt to test the armour's resistance by stabbing or slashing while wearing it.
