Late Medieval Fluted Steel Cuirass | 15th Century Armor

Historically Inspired Design

In the 15th century, the armourer's craft reached its zenith. This cuirass utilizes a technique known as fluting. These elegant ridges are not merely decorative—they act as structural reinforcements, strengthening the steel plate against impacts without needing to increase its thickness or weight. Additionally, they help deflect weapon points away from the body's center.

The armour consists of a main breastplate and several articulated lames (segments) at the bottom, protecting the abdomen and hips while allowing you to bend forward or mount a horse. The edges are rolled, increasing safety for the wearer and preventing the chafing of undergarments. The backplate mirrors the design of the front, ensuring complete torso protection.

Comfort and Fit

The cuirass features adjustable genuine leather straps at the shoulders and sides. These allow you to tighten the armour securely to your body shape. For a proper fit and comfort, it is essential to wear a high-quality gambeson underneath. This padding not only absorbs shocks but also fills the space beneath the steel, preventing abrasions.

Specifications and Sizing

This armour is available in two material thicknesses. The 1.2 mm (18 gauge) version is ideal for LARP, theatre, and light combat where lower weight is appreciated. The 1.6 mm (16 gauge) version is suitable for more demanding re-enactment and contact sparring where durability is a priority.

Armour Care

Your armour is made from mild steel (carbon steel) and requires regular maintenance to prevent rust:

  • Storage: Keep the cuirass in a dry environment. Wipe it completely dry after every use.
  • Oiling: Regularly apply a thin coat of mineral oil or a synthetic maintenance oil (like WD-40), especially before storing for long periods.
  • Leather: Treat the leather straps occasionally with leather conditioner to keep them flexible and prevent cracking.
  • Tip: If minor rust spots appear, they can be easily removed with fine steel wool or a polishing pad, followed by re-oiling the area.

The armour is shipped with a coating of oil for protection. Please degrease/wipe it down before wearing it for the first time to avoid staining your costume.
