A Glimpse into History: Armour for the Rich and Poor
In the Middle Ages, the gambeson was an absolutely crucial part of military equipment. For less affluent soldiers, such as infantrymen or archers, it often represented the sole yet relatively effective protection for the torso. Its multi-layered, quilted construction could dampen sword cuts and absorb the energy of arrows fired from a distance. For knights and men-at-arms in full plate armour, the gambeson was an indispensable undergarment. It not only protected the body from chafing against metal plates and mail but, most importantly, absorbed the kinetic energy of blows that could otherwise cause fractures or internal injuries, even if the armour itself was not pierced.
A Piece of History
Did you know that the term "Aketon," another name for the gambeson, comes from the Arabic "al-qutun," meaning cotton? This highlights the cultural exchange and the influence of the Middle East on European military technology during the Crusades.
How to Care for Your Gambeson
To ensure your padded jacket serves you for as long as possible in its full glory, follow these guidelines:
- Cleaning: Due to the leather straps and metal buckles, we recommend dry cleaning only or very careful hand washing in cold water with a mild soap. Protect the leather parts from getting wet.
- Drying: Never put it in a tumble dryer! Dry flat in the open air, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
- Ironing: If necessary, iron the cotton parts on a low temperature, ideally through another cloth. Avoid the leather and metal components.
- Storage: Keep in a dry, well-ventilated place, preferably hung on a wide hanger.
