A Glimpse into History: The Gambeson, an Unsung Hero
The gambeson (also known as an aketon or padded jack) was the unsung hero of the medieval battlefield. For thousands of foot soldiers, from archers to halberdiers, it was often the only form of armour available. Thanks to its many layers of fabric and padding, it could effectively absorb cuts and thrusts. For a knight in plate armour, it was absolutely indispensable. It acted as a shock absorber, distributing the energy of blows dealt to the metal plates and thus preventing fractures and bruises. At the same time, it protected the body from the chafing and discomfort of wearing heavy armour. This long style with a stand-up collar is typical of the High and Late Middle Ages (c. 14th–15th centuries).
How to Care for Your Gambeson
Due to the combination of materials (cotton, inner padding, leather), a gambeson requires specific care:
- We do not recommend machine washing. It could damage the leather parts and cause the inner padding to clump unevenly.
- We recommend spot cleaning minor dirt with a brush and a mild soap solution.
- For heavy soiling, entrust the gambeson to a professional dry cleaner.
- After each use, let the gambeson air out and dry thoroughly to prevent mildew.
