14th Century Quilted Gambeson, "Charles de Blois" Style

Detailed Description and Design

This arming doublet has been crafted with the utmost attention to historical accuracy and functionality. Its design is based on period depictions and surviving examples from the 14th century.

  • Outer Material: Two layers of strong and durable cotton canvas ensure a long lifespan, even in demanding conditions.
  • Padding: A thick inner layer of recycled textile fibres (a blend of wool, cotton, and polyester) effectively absorbs impacts, is breathable, and is also environmentally friendly.
  • Cut and Construction: The elegant, slightly tailored cut extends to about mid-thigh. The high standing collar protects the neck from chafing from a mail coif or plate armour.
  • Fastenings: The most distinctive feature is the long row of fabric-covered buttons running down the centre of the chest. Additional buttons close the vents at the wrists, making it easier to don over padded gloves.
  • Quilting: The combination of vertical and diamond-pattern quilting in the upper section not only looks great but, more importantly, keeps the padding in place and contributes to the overall strength of the garment.

Where and How Can You Use This Gambeson?

Thanks to its robust construction and historical appearance, this aketon is the perfect choice for many occasions:

  • Historical Fencing and Reenactment: An indispensable part of armour for anyone involved in 14th and 15th-century reconstruction. It provides reliable protection under both mail and plate armour.
  • LARP and Fantasy Events: Whether you're portraying a nobleman, a knight, or an elite soldier, this gambeson will elevate your costume to a new level.
  • Medieval Fairs and Markets: Stand out from the crowd in a garment that is not only stylish but also comfortable and functional.
  • Theatre and Film: An excellent choice for costumers looking for durable and authentic historical clothing.

A Glimpse into History: The Pourpoint of Charles de Blois

Button-fronted gambesons became fashionable in the mid-14th century. They allowed for a much tighter and more form-fitting cut than older, pullover styles. This particular design is inspired by the famous and exceptionally well-preserved original that belonged to the Breton Duke Charles de Blois (c. 1319–1364). Known as a "pourpoint," this garment was not just a layer worn under armour but also a presentable piece of clothing worn on its own.

A Historical Tidbit

The original pourpoint of Charles de Blois, now housed in the Musée des Tissus in Lyon, is considered one of the oldest surviving examples of this type of quilted jack in the world. Its detailed study has allowed historians and craftsmen to understand the 14th-century construction techniques used to create a garment that was simultaneously protective, flexible, and elegant.

How to Care for Your New Gambeson

To keep this masterpiece looking its best for as long as possible, give it the proper care:

  • Cleaning: Due to the thick padding and fabric buttons, we strongly recommend dry cleaning only. Machine washing could permanently damage the structure of the padding. Minor stains can be carefully spot-cleaned with a damp cloth.
  • Drying: Never put it in a tumble dryer! Dry it flat in the open air, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Storage: Store in a dry, well-ventilated place, ideally hung on a wide, sturdy hanger to maintain its shape.

Please note: This padded jack is intended for historical fencing, reenactment, LARP, and similar activities. However, it is not certified protective equipment and does not offer sufficient protection for modern full-contact sports like buhurt (HMB).

Size Chart

The most important measurement for selecting the correct size is the wearer's maximum chest circumference. The other dimensions are the measurements of the garment itself in cm. Remember to account for the undergarments you will wear beneath the gambeson.
