Norman Helmet Spangenhelm with Chainmail Aventail, 11th Century

Experience History First-Hand

This Norman helmet is designed for real use. Whether you are preparing for a historical battle, a LARP event, or simply completing your costume, this helmet will not disappoint. Its robust construction and weight of nearly 4 kg will give you the feel of a real warrior in a shield wall. Thanks to the internal fabric liner and the leather chin strap with a buckle, it sits securely on your head. For maximum comfort and safety, we recommend wearing a padded arming cap underneath. Outside of the action, it will become a stunning display piece in your collection.

The Legacy of Norman Warriors

Conical helmets of the Spangenhelm type were widespread in the Early Middle Ages, and for good reason. Their production was simpler than forging a bowl from a single piece of metal, yet they offered excellent protection. The conical shape effectively deflected sword and axe blows, while the wide nasal protected the centre of the face. The chainmail aventail, suspended from the rim of the bowl, then provided flexible and effective protection for the vulnerable neck. It was precisely this kind of helmet that the Normans wore during their famous conquest of England in 1066.

A Point of Interest: The Bayeux Tapestry

The most famous depiction of this type of helmet is undoubtedly the renowned Bayeux Tapestry. This nearly 70-meter-long embroidered cloth details the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings. In many scenes, you can see Norman and Anglo-Saxon warriors wearing conical helmets with nasals that are virtually identical to this replica. It is a fascinating historical record of how crucial and widespread this piece of medieval armour was.

How to Care For Your Helmet

To keep your helmet shining and always ready for battle, give it a little care. After each use, wipe it carefully with a dry cloth to remove moisture and sweat. From time to time, lightly coat the outside with a conservation oil (e.g., mineral oil or WD-40) to prevent rust. Treat the leather parts with a suitable leather conditioner. Store it in a dry, ventilated place.
