Muscle Cuirass "Hero", Greek Style, 1.2mm Steel

Become a Hero of Antiquity

This two-piece armour faithfully replicates the design that became synonymous with ancient warriors. The front piece is artistically sculpted into the form of an idealised male torso, while the back piece is smooth and functional. Both parts are securely fastened together using six high-quality leather straps with buckles, which allow for considerable flexibility in sizing.

Historical Context: A Symbol of Status and Power

The muscle cuirass (Latin: lorica musculata) has its roots in ancient Greece, appearing as early as the Archaic period. Originally made of bronze, it was very expensive. It represented not only protection but, above all, a symbol of status, wealth, and admiration for the perfect athletic physique. It was primarily worn by wealthy hoplites. The Romans later adopted it from the Greeks, where it became a characteristic part of the equipment for high-ranking officers (Legates, Tribunes) and Emperors, as evidenced by the famous Augustus of Prima Porta statue. For the common legionary, it was too expensive and impractical; they relied on mail (lorica hamata) or, later, segmental armour (lorica segmentata).

Use and Warning

This cuirass is made from 1.2 mm (approx. 18 gauge) structural steel. It provides good protection for LARP, stage combat, cosplay, or as part of a costume for theatre or film. However, it is not a certified piece of protective equipment intended for full-contact combat, such as buhurt or Battle of the Nations, where stricter standards and greater material thickness are required.

Caring for Your Armour

This cuirass is made from structural steel, which is not stainless and is prone to rust. To ensure your armour serves you well for a long time, it must be cared for properly:

  • After each use, dry the armour thoroughly, especially the inside where sweat may have accumulated.
  • Treat the clean, dry surface with a thin layer of preservation oil (e.g., Ballistol, WD-40, or mineral oil).
  • Store the armour in a dry and well-ventilated place.
  • What not to do: Do not store the cuirass in a damp environment or wrapped in plastic, where moisture can get trapped. Do not let sweat or dirt dry on it, as this is corrosive. Do not use harsh abrasives for cleaning, as this will scratch the polished surface.
