Conical Norman Nasal Helmet with Celtic Dragon Brass Fittings

Historical Context and Fantasy Inspiration

While this piece is not a direct replica of a specific historical artifact, it represents a highly successful historical fantasy fusion. The overall conical shape of the bowl and the presence of a nasal guard are distinct hallmarks of early to high medieval Norman helmets (prominently featured in the 11th century, such as on the Bayeux Tapestry). However, the ornamentation draws heavily from different cultural roots. The zoomorphic elements forming the eyebrows and nasal—depicting dragons or serpents intertwined in knotwork—are deeply inspired by Celtic and Viking Age Nordic art. This masterful blend makes the helmet incredibly versatile for characters inspired by Norse mythology, fantasy realms, or LARP warrior factions.

Usage and Important Safety Warnings

This nasal helmet is primarily designed as a visually striking accessory for LARP, cosplay, theatrical performances, historical reenactment gatherings, and TV/film productions. Because the bowl is crafted from 1.2 mm (18 gauge) mild steel, it is strictly not intended for full-contact, heavy combat such as buhurt, HEMA tournaments with steel weapons, or Battle of the Nations. Subjecting this helmet to heavy, unpadded strikes could result in structural deformation and severe personal injury. It is perfectly suitable, however, for light stage combat, foam weapon LARP battles, or simply as a magnificent display piece for a collector's armory.

How to Wear and Recommended Accessories

The helmet comes pre-fitted with a leather suspension liner and a chin strap, making it ready to wear out of the box. However, wearing steel armor directly against the skull is never advisable. For maximum comfort, proper shock absorption, and to ensure the helmet sits correctly on your head, we highly recommend wearing a padded arming cap (padded coif) underneath. This addition will vastly improve your experience during long days at events and adds a necessary layer of historical authenticity to your kit.

Care and Maintenance of Steel Armor

Despite its blackened antique finish, this helmet is forged from high-carbon mild steel, which naturally oxidizes and rusts if neglected. To keep your armor in pristine fighting condition, always dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth after use, especially if exposed to sweat or rain. Following this, lightly coat all steel surfaces with a reliable gun oil or armor wax (such as Ballistol). The leather liner and chin strap should also be treated occasionally with leather conditioner or balm to prevent the organic material from drying out and cracking.
