Norman Spangenhelm Knight Helmet with Full Face Guard
Construction and Historical Context of the Armour
This type of head protection, often referred to as a transitional helmet, was developed as a direct response to the vulnerability of the lower face left exposed by older nasal helmets. The traditional Spangenhelm construction relies on several steel plates securely joined together by heavy riveted metal bands (spangen). The prominent conical dome was ingeniously designed to deflect incoming strikes, allowing swords and axes to glance off harmlessly. The most striking feature is the firmly attached face guard extending below the chin. It is equipped with narrow eye slits for reliable vision and multiple vertical ventilation slots to ensure sufficient airflow even in the heat of battle. This helmet style was a favourite among Norman knights and European crusaders during the High Middle Ages.
Proper Usage and Essential Safety Warnings
This helmet is crafted from 16-gauge (1.6 mm) mild steel. While it is a robust, fully functional replica excellent for light stage combat, LARP, and historical displays, we must strongly advise that this armour is not rated for full-contact heavy combat (such as buhurt or Battle of the Nations) involving heavy steel weapons. Inside the dome, you will find a fully adjustable, stitched leather suspension liner. This critical component absorbs minor shocks and keeps the helmet properly seated so the eye slits align perfectly with your vision. An adjustable leather chin strap with a buckle fastening ensures the helmet remains securely in place during vigorous movement.
Maintenance of Steel Armour and Leather Fittings
To ensure your helmet serves you well for years and retains its polished gleam, regular maintenance is essential. Mild steel is susceptible to rust, so it is vital to wipe away moisture, dirt, and sweat from both the interior and exterior after every use. Always apply a thin protective coat of gun oil or armour wax before storing. Keep the helmet in a dry, low-humidity environment. To prevent the organic components from drying out, occasionally treat the leather suspension liner and chin strap with a high-quality leather conditioner.
Recommended Gear for Maximum Comfort
To ensure maximum wearing comfort, proper shock absorption, and authentic historical layering, we highly recommend purchasing a thick padded arming cap (coif) and a riveted chainmail standard to wear underneath this helmet.
