The Sentinel of Emden: Hans Stalhoff’s Flame-Bladed Zweihänder
Craftsmanship and Structural Details
The unsharpened blade is forged from high carbon steel (mild steel construction), featuring the iconic wavy pattern designed to intimidate and disrupt enemy weapons. The design includes a leather-wrapped ricasso, allowing for a "half-swording" grip, supported by two sturdy parierhaken (parrying hooks) to protect your hands in close combat. The handle is made from genuine hardwood, topped with a heavy steel pommel that provides the necessary counterweight for this 3.9 kg (8.6 lbs) giant.
Easy Assembly Instructions
To ensure the best protection during transport, the crossguard comes unmounted. Assembly is straightforward and requires no special tools:
- Unscrew the pommel from the tang.
- Loosen the nut securing the hardwood grip.
- Remove the grip, slide the crossguard onto the tang, and then reassemble the parts in reverse order.
In just a few minutes, your "Gassenhauer" will be ready for display.
Historical Context: The Blade of the Doppelsöldner
In the 1500s, these swords were the weapon of choice for the Doppelsöldner—experienced mercenaries who were paid "double wages" for standing in the high-risk front lines. Their role was to swing these greatswords in wide arcs to chop the heads off enemy pikes. This replica is named in honor of Hans Stalhoff, representing the brave Landsknechts who defended the Hanseatic cities. The wavy "flame" shape wasn't just for show; it helped guide the enemy's spear point away from the wielder more effectively than a straight blade.
