Protection Reflecting History
The construction of this helmet is ingeniously simple and effective. The conical shape of the bowl is not just an aesthetic choice – it was designed so that blows from swords and axes would slide off harmlessly, rather than transferring the full force of the impact to your skull. This particular model features a slight forward tilt of the peak, an element that appears in depictions from the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. Your face is protected by a sturdy nasal guard, which was typical for Norman horsemen. It provides protection for the nose without obstructing your vision or breathing, something you will certainly appreciate in the heat of battle.
The helmet surface has a special "aged" finish with texture, so you won't shine like a novice who just bought their armour at the market. For your comfort, an adjustable liner is installed inside to ensure the helmet fits well.
Usage and Safety
The helmet is made of mild steel and is suitable primarily for LARP, stage combat, theatre, and film extras. Although the shape is historically functional, the material thickness and construction are not intended for full-contact combat such as Buhurt (HMB) or heavy historical fencing with steel weapons, where there is a risk of denting.
For maximum comfort and safety, I strongly recommend wearing a padded arming cap underneath the helmet. It not only cushions impacts but also absorbs sweat and helps the helmet sit better on your head. If you want to achieve a perfect historical look, wear a mail coif over the padding, just as the Norman knights did.
Armour Care
To ensure the helmet serves you for many years without rusting, it requires regular maintenance. Wipe it dry with a cloth after every use. If you are not going to wear it for a long time, treat the metal surface with preserving oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil). Store it in a dry place. Treat the leather liner and chin strap occasionally with leather conditioner to prevent cracking.
