Decorative Plate Gauntlets Toledo with Gold Details – Marto

A Jewel of Spanish Masters

These gauntlets are not designed to be battered on the battlefield, but to be admired. They are made in the famous city of Toledo, Spain, a place with a thousand-year tradition of crafting the finest blades and armour. These are finger gauntlets, where each finger is protected by individual rows of scales, allowing for finer dexterity than mittens. The surface is polished to a high mirror shine and decorated with etching and brass, gold-plated rivets and appliqués.

On the back of the hand and the cuff, you will find motifs of the heraldic lily (fleur-de-lis) and the double-headed eagle, referencing imperial grandeur and the royal courts of Europe. The cuff features an elegant, pointed shape typical of Gothic and early Renaissance design, ensuring freedom of movement at the wrist.

Usage and Historical Context

Historically, armour decorated in this manner was the privilege of kings, dukes, and the highest nobility. It was not worn into the mud of war but served as "Parade Armour" for ceremonial entries into cities, coronations, or tournament ceremonies. These gauntlets reflect precisely that era when armour was as much jewellery as it was protection.

Important Warning: Although the gauntlets are made of steel, this is strictly a decorative item. They are not constructed for historical fencing, HEMA, buhurt, or any other contact activities. The material thickness and rivet construction would not withstand a heavy blow, which could lead to damage to the product or injury to the hand.

They serve perfectly as:

  • A centrepiece for interior decoration (on a mantelpiece, in a display cabinet).
  • A costume accessory for theatre or photoshoots where there is no risk of contact combat.
  • A luxurious gift for history enthusiasts.

How to Care for Your Gauntlets

To keep this masterpiece looking beautiful, it requires basic care, even as a decoration. Steel can oxidize due to humidity in the air. Regularly wipe the gauntlets with a dry, soft cloth to remove dust and fingerprints, which are visible on the polished surface. Occasionally, it is advisable to treat the metal with a preserving oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil). If you choose to wear the gauntlets as part of a costume, I recommend wearing thin leather or fabric gloves underneath for greater comfort, as the interior consists of bare metal and leather straps.

I recommend purchasing a wooden display stand for these gauntlets to make them stand out on your desk or bookshelf.
