Late Medieval Articulated Gauntlets – Steel Finger Protection
Construction and Mobility
These gauntlets are formed by an ingenious system of steel plates and lames. The individual segments are not connected directly metal-to-metal but are riveted onto sturdy leather straps. This construction method ensures high flexibility—you can easily bend your fingers and make a fist. The gauntlets feature an open palm design. Inside, you will find leather loops for your fingers and straps across the palm that hold the plates in place. Important Note: These plate gauntlets do not include an inner leather glove. To avoid chafing from metal edges and rivets and to cushion impacts, it is essential to wear high-quality leather gloves underneath. The inside of the plates is coated with black paint. This is not a defect but practical protection against rust caused by humidity and sweat from your hands.
Historical Usage
Finger gauntlets of this type appeared during the 14th and 15th centuries. While "hourglass" gauntlets protecting mostly the back of the hand were popular earlier, the evolution of fencing techniques created a need to protect each finger individually. Such armour allowed knights and men-at-arms to better manipulate polearms, horse reins, or daggers.
Armour Care
To ensure the gauntlets serve you for many years without rusting, they require care: * After every use: Wipe the inside and outside dry. Do not leave them damp in your bag. * Preservation: Regularly treat the steel parts with preservation oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil). * Leather: Occasionally grease the leather straps with leather balm to prevent them from becoming brittle and cracking.
Safety Warning
The gauntlets are made of mild steel with a thickness of approx. 1.0 mm (20 gauge). This ensures low weight but also means they are not designed for full-contact heavy combat (Buhurt, HMB), where there is a risk of material deformation and finger injury from heavy blows. They are ideal for LARP, film, theatre, and controlled stage combat.
