The middle, shock-absorbing layer consists of thick padding from recycled textile fibres (a blend of cotton, wool, and polyester) that effectively absorbs impact. The inner layer is a soft and breathable lining for comfort during extended wear.
• Thoughtful Design: The thigh-length cut and long sleeves protect most of the body. The high stand-up collar provides additional protection for the neck. Vertical quilting keeps the padding in place and does not restrict mobility. A slit at the back allows for ease of movement, walking, and horse riding.
• Reliable Fastening: The coat is secured with four strong straps made of genuine leather with sturdy brass buckles. They not only look great but also allow for easy adjustment and a secure fit.

Quilted coats (also known as an aketon, pourpoint, or jupon) were the cornerstone of armour for centuries, from the early Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Their effectiveness was surprisingly high. A well-made and thickly padded gambeson could not only cushion cutting blows but, according to some contemporary accounts, could even stop a longbow arrow at a distance, making it a vital piece of protection for both infantry and cavalry.

Care and Maintenance

To ensure your gambeson serves you for as long as possible and looks great, we recommend the following care:

• Cleaning: Spot cleaning with a damp cloth is ideal. If necessary, hand wash only in cold water using a mild detergent. Machine washing is not recommended due to the leather parts and the risk of the padding clumping unevenly.
• Drying: Never tumble dry! Dry flat on a level surface, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
• Leather Parts: Treat the straps regularly with a leather care product to keep them supple and prevent cracking.
