Padded Gambeson with Strap Closure and Open Armpits
Functional Design and Authentic Materials
Unlike cheap costume substitutes, this gambeson is made from thick cotton canvas. The filling consists of layered organic recycled cotton, which absorbs blows excellently but breathes better than synthetic padding. The inner lining is made of soft cotton, comfortable to touch even when worn over a linen shirt. The total material thickness is around 8 to 8.5 mm (approx. 0.3 inches), providing solid padding.
The fastening is secured by four sturdy leather straps with brass buckles. This solution is not only aesthetically pleasing, giving the gambeson a rugged look, but also very practical for quick dressing and allows for slight adjustment of the fit.
Historical Context
Gambesons were the cornerstone of warrior protection for centuries. While for poorer foot soldiers it was often the only armor they could afford, knights wore it under maille and later plate armor. It cushioned impacts, prevented chafing from metal, and in the event of an arrow strike, helped (along with the rings) to prevent deep penetration into the body. The open armpit is a historically documented feature that addressed exactly the issue of mobility and thermoregulation in battle.

Care Instructions
To ensure your gambeson serves you for many years, it requires proper care. Never wash it in a washing machine at high temperatures and do not use a dryer – the natural cotton could shrink, and the leather straps could harden.
- We recommend hand washing in lukewarm water (up to 30 °C / 86 °F) with a gentle detergent.
- Try to keep the leather straps dry, or treat them with leather balm or beeswax after drying.
- Dry flat in the air (not in direct sunlight or on a heater). A wet gambeson is very heavy and could stretch out of shape if hung up.
- Store in a dry, ventilated place to prevent mold (cotton tends to absorb moisture).
This product from the Lord of Battles brand is a great foundation for your costume. For a complete look and protection, you can complement it with a maille coif or steel pauldrons.
