14th Century Hourglass Gauntlets – Knightly Armor | 16 Gauge Steel
Design Proven by History
The name "hourglass" refers to the characteristic shape of the cuff, which tapers towards the wrist and then flares out sharply. This ingenious historical design serves two purposes: first, it allows for excellent wrist mobility (essential for advanced fencing techniques), and second, the cuff shape acts as a shield, deflecting enemy blades away from your fingers and forearms.
Construction and Comfort
The gauntlets are handcrafted from 1.6 mm (16 gauge) mild steel. The fingers are protected by a system of small, riveted scales (gadlings) that follow the hand's movement when clenched into a fist. The steel plates are backed with red leather, giving the gauntlets a fierce and luxurious appearance.
Your comfort is ensured by a sewn-in inner glove made of genuine black suede leather. This ensures that the metal does not press directly against the skin while providing a firm, non-slip grip on your weapon. A leather strap across the palm secures the plate section to the hand, ensuring the gauntlet stays in place even during vigorous movements.
Size Chart
The gauntlets are supplied in one universal size (corresponds approx. to size 9-10). Please measure your hand according to the diagram to check fit:
| Measurement | Metric (cm) | Imperial (inch) | Description |
| A (Glove Length) | 25 cm | 9 7/8 in | Total length from middle finger tip to cuff end |
| B (Knuckle Width) | 13 cm | 5 1/8 in | Width across knuckles (outer) |
| C (Palm Width) | 15 cm | 5 7/8 in | Width at the thumb/palm area |
| D (Wrist Width) | 9 cm | 3 1/2 in | Narrowest point of the cuff |
| E (Cuff Opening) | 13 cm | 5 1/8 in | Width of the opening for the forearm |
Important Usage Warning
Although the gauntlets are made of solid 16-gauge steel, it is mild steel, not tempered spring steel. These gauntlets are not intended for full-contact heavy combat such as Buhurt or Battle of the Nations, where plate deformation could occur. They are ideal for:
- Standard historical fencing (wood, synthetic, blunt steel weapons with reasonable force).
- LARP and Cosplay.
- Film and theater use.
Armor Care
The gauntlets will arrive oiled for preservation. Wipe off excess oil with a dry cloth before first use. After each event, the steel must be cleaned and lightly re-oiled (e.g., with WD-40 or Ballistol) to prevent rust. We recommend occasionally treating the inner suede glove with a leather conditioner to keep it supple and prevent cracking due to sweat.
