Do you want to breathe the atmosphere of knightly halls into your home, or are you looking for the perfect accessory for your Hundred Years' War costume? This beautiful, hand-painted steel shield bearing the royal coat of arms of Edward III is exactly the piece that will instantly catch the eye. Its design tells a story of ambition, power, and the English king's historical claim to the French throne.

The shape of the shield corresponds to the classic "Heater" type, which was the dominant type of defence for both cavalry and infantry in the 13th and 14th centuries. Thanks to its smaller size compared to the older, large almond (kite) shields of the early Middle Ages, it was more manoeuvrable in combat while still offering excellent protection for the torso. Almond Heater Shield with the Royal Arms of King Edward III – 71 cm

Construction and Grip

The shield is made of mild steel with a thickness of approx. 1.2 mm (18 gauge). This thickness is ideal for decorative purposes, theatrical performances, parades, or light stage fencing, as the shield is not unnecessarily heavy. The entire surface is slightly convex, which helps to deflect blows outwards in combat. The back is painted black to protect it from corrosion.

For a firm and comfortable grip, the shield is equipped with:

  • A Metal Handle: A firmly riveted handle on the back for a palm grip.
  • A Leather Strap: An adjustable genuine leather strap with a buckle is used to secure the forearm. Thanks to this, the shield sits stably on the arm and is easy to manoeuvre.

Historical Window: Why Lions and Lilies?

The coat of arms on this shield is a famous example of "quartering". When King Edward III of England laid claim to the French throne in 1340, he changed his coat of arms. To the traditional three English lions (actually leopards, heraldically lions passant guardant) on a red field, he added the French golden lilies (fleur-de-lis) on a blue field. By placing the French emblem in the first and fourth quarters (the most honourable positions), he clearly showed that he considered himself primarily the King of France. This shield is thus a direct reference to the beginning of the Hundred Years' War.

Maintenance and Care

The shield is made of carbon steel, which can be prone to rust. Store it in a dry place. If you use it outdoors or touch it frequently, we recommend occasionally treating the metal parts (especially the unpainted or scratched ones) with a preservative oil (e.g., WD-40 or Ballistol). Treat the leather strap occasionally with a leather balm to prevent it from cracking.

Please Note: This shield is primarily intended as a decoration or for costuming purposes. Due to the 1.2 mm plate thickness, it is not suitable for full-contact combat (buhurt, HMB), where it could be deformed.
