Knightly Hourglass Gauntlets with Brass Accents, 16 Gauge Steel

Protection and Elegance Combined

These gauntlets are a classic representative of hand protection from the second half of the 14th and early 15th centuries. They get their name from their characteristic shape, which narrows at the wrist and widens again towards the forearm, resembling an hourglass. This design was historically revolutionary – it allowed for excellent wrist mobility, which you need for fine sword work, while providing massive protection against blows aimed at the forearm.

The gauntlets are made from 16 gauge mild steel (approx. 1.6 mm), a thickness sufficient for most full-contact combat activities including SCA or HMB. The finish is polished and contrasts with brass trim and rivets, giving the gauntlets a touch of luxury. On the knuckles, you will find small brass spikes (gadlings), which historically served as an emergency striking weapon in close-quarters combat.

Comfort and Use

Firmly stitched inside the steel shell are suede leather gloves. This ensures that the steel does not slip, does not chafe the back of the hand, and dampens the impact of blows. The finger segments are designed so that the individual scales overlap smoothly when making a fist, leaving no gaps for an opponent's blade to penetrate. Thanks to the "hourglass" shape of the cuff, you can wear the gauntlets over a gambeson or chainmail shirt.

Although the manufacturer indicates suitability for full-contact combat (HMB, Battle of the Nations), as experienced fencers, we recommend considering mittens for the toughest mass battles, as they generally protect the fingers better. However, for duels, SCA, reenactment, and LARP, these finger gauntlets are an excellent choice due to their superior dexterity.

Armor Care

To keep your gauntlets serving you long and looking great, they need care. Wipe them dry after every use to remove sweat, which is aggressive and causes corrosion. Apply a thin layer of preservative oil (e.g., WD-40 or machine oil) to the steel parts. Occasionally treat the leather parts with leather conditioner to keep them supple and prevent cracking. Store them in a dry place.
