Plate Gauntlets "Churburg" – Hourglass Style c. 1390

Construction for Combat and Display

The hourglass shape is not merely aesthetic. The flared cuff protects the wrist without restricting its rotation – a key feature for effective sword fencing or handling polearms. * Protection: Each finger joint is protected by a separate steel segment securely riveted to the leather base. The back of the hand is covered by a massive plate reinforced with a brass rim. * Aesthetics: Brass elements on the knuckles and cuff edges give the gauntlets the appearance of armour fit for a nobleman or a wealthy mercenary. * Comfort: Inside, a soft yet durable suede leather glove is firmly stitched in, cushioning impacts and preventing chafing.

Historical Context

This type of gauntlet appeared in the second half of the 14th century and became standard for knightly cavalry. It replaced older mail mittens, which could not sufficiently protect hands against crushing blows. Thanks to the articulated construction, they allowed for fine motor skills, enabling the knight to safely handle reins and weapons. Similar examples can be found in museum collections across Europe; perhaps the most famous is armour No. 13 from the Churburg Castle collection.

Usage and Care

These gauntlets are ideal for historical fencing, re-enactment (1380–1420), and LARP. However, they are not certified for full-contact sports like Buhurt (HMB), where extreme demands are placed on material durability. To ensure your gauntlets last a long time: * Wipe them dry after every use and oil the steel parts (WD40, Ballistol, mineral oil). * Treat the leather glove occasionally with leather conditioner to keep it supple. * Store them in a dry place, ideally in a cloth bag.
