16th–17th Century Cuirassier Gauntlets, 16 Gauge Steel
Design and Functionality
Handmade from sturdy 16-gauge mild steel (approx. 1.6 mm), these gauntlets are built to withstand the rigors of combat. The core of the gauntlet features a high-quality suede inner glove, providing a comfortable and secure fit. The steel plates are meticulously riveted to the leather foundation, ensuring durability.
The standout feature is the articulation. The back of the hand is protected by sliding lames that allow for full wrist flexion. The fingers are individually armoured with multiple small steel scales (gadlings), riveted onto leather strips. This intricate construction mimics the human hand's movement, offering superior grip and dexterity compared to rigid mitten gauntlets. The long, flared cuff provides excellent protection for the wrist and forearm against glancing blows.
Historical Context
These gauntlets represent the gear of the Cuirassiers, the heavy cavalrymen who dominated European warfare in the 16th and 17th centuries. Even as firearms became prevalent, these warriors retained their "three-quarter armour" to protect against sword cuts, pike thrusts, and pistol shots. The gauntlets were essential not only for defense but also for handling the heavy Pallasch swords and wheellock pistols of the era. Owning a pair connects you directly to the lineage of these legendary iron-clad riders.
Care and Maintenance
As these gauntlets are made from mild steel, they require regular maintenance to prevent rust and ensure longevity:
- After Use: Always wipe the metal dry to remove sweat and moisture. Allow the leather inner glove to air dry naturally (avoid direct heat sources).
- Oiling: Apply a thin layer of mineral oil or a gun oil (like WD-40 or Ballistol) to the steel surfaces during storage.
- Storage: Keep in a dry environment. The product ships with a protective oil layer which can be easily wiped off with a dry cloth before first use.
Safety Warning
While crafted from heavy 16-gauge steel, these are articulated finger gauntlets. They are not suitable for full-contact heavy combat such as Buhurt or Battle of the Nations, where crushing blows from polearms can compromise the finger joints. They are, however, perfectly suited for historical re-enactment, scenic fighting, and standard sparring intensity.
