Lightweight Cotton Gambeson with Wool Padding, Vertical Quilting
Are you looking for the ideal base for your historical costume that won't restrict your movement while protecting you from armour chafing? This **lightweight gambeson** (also known as a **padded jack** or **aketon**) is exactly the missing link in your kit. Thanks to its reduced thickness and quality natural materials, it is excellent not only as a **cushioning layer under chainmail**, but also as a standalone outer garment for **LARP**, camping, or medieval fairs when you are off the battlefield. It looks great, breathes well, and gives your figure the correct period silhouette. Further product information ...
Lightweight Cotton Gambeson with Wool Padding, Vertical Quilting
This model features elegant **vertical quilting**, which visually slims the figure and keeps the padding well in place. Both the outer and inner layers are made of durable cotton twill, while the inner padding consists of wool fleece. This combination of materials is key – wool provides warmth in winter and wicks away sweat better than synthetics in summer, while the cotton surface is comfortable to the touch. The gambeson fastens at the neck with lacing, allowing for adjustable tightness up to the collar. For maximum mobility during combat and walking, practical slits are located on the sides (front and back). With a material thickness of approx. 5–8 mm, this is a lighter armour variant that fits comfortably even under tighter plate armour pieces.
Historical Context
In the Middle Ages, the gambeson was not just a privilege of knights. It was an absolutely common part of attire. Warriors wore it under chainmail (maille) to cushion the impact of blows that rings alone cannot stop, and to prevent the metal from chafing the skin. Poorer foot soldiers often wore it as their only protection (though in much thicker layers). This specific lighter type resembles civilian doublets or so-called "pourpoints" worn in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance as everyday wear or light under-armour.

Care Instructions
Since the padding contains wool, you need to treat this garment with care to prevent shrinking:
- Washing: We recommend hand washing in lukewarm water or machine washing on a special wool cycle (max 30°C / 86°F). Use detergents containing lanolin.
- Drying: Do not tumble dry! Allow to dry flat in the air; do not hang on a hanger when wet (it could stretch).
- Storage: Store in a dry and ventilated place, ideally on a sturdy hanger to allow the gambeson to air out.
Warning: Although this is a functional gambeson, due to the 5-8 mm thickness, we do not recommend it as standalone protection for full-contact combat (Buhurt). For these purposes, it serves as an additional cushioning layer.
For a perfect look, we recommend complementing this gambeson with a quality leather belt (e.g., SKU 110114) and medieval trousers (e.g., SKU 120020).
