Early Medieval Leather Ankle Boots Norman with Brass Buckles

An Authentic Step into History

The Normans, relentless warriors and conquerors, required functional and durable gear for their campaigns. These ankle boots are based on archaeological finds and contemporary illuminated manuscripts from the 11th and 12th centuries. Their unique construction, where the instep is overlapped and tightened with leather straps passing through metal buckles, provides surprisingly firm support for your foot. The slightly pointed toe reflects the period fashion trends that were beginning to spread across Western Europe at the time. Footwear in the early Middle Ages was a key indicator of status – these LARP boots would have likely belonged to a wealthier warrior, mercenary, or a skilled craftsman.

How to Care for Your Leather Boots

Leather is a natural material and requires your regular attention to maintain its properties. The footwear is already treated with a high-quality beeswax leather balm straight from production. Regularly rub leather oil or wax balm into the leather to prevent it from drying out, stiffening, and cracking. Applying balm softens the leather, helps waterproof it, and gives it a slightly darker, richer hue. After every event, gently wipe away mud with a damp cloth and let the boots dry slowly at standard room temperature. Never dry them near an open fire, on a radiator, or in direct summer sunlight – the leather would become irreparably damaged. Any scuffs from demanding battles can be easily masked and colour-matched with standard shoe polish.

Practical Advice for Safe Wear

Keep in mind that historical smooth leather soles have completely different properties compared to modern rubber footwear. They can be highly slippery on wet grass, cobblestones, in mud, or on modern smooth indoor floors. Therefore, exercise increased caution when fencing, running, or moving through difficult terrain.

If you wear orthotic insoles and choose our "custom-made" option, it is necessary to physically send these insoles to our address. They will be carefully and precisely fitted directly into your new boots to guarantee maximum comfort.

We recommend you purchase thick woollen socks or linen leg wraps from our range to go with these boots, as they wick away sweat perfectly and prevent blisters.
