Medieval Leather Viking Boots Jarl with Horn Toggles
Historical Context and Adjusting the Lacing
The title Jarl (Earl in the Anglo-Saxon sphere) designated a powerful chieftain in Scandinavia, whose position was second only to the king himself. Jarls owned vast territories, ships, and maintained their own large military retinue. Decorative elements, such as the woven leather detail on the back of the calf and the complex fastening with horn or bone buttons, clearly indicate the higher social status of the wearer during the Early Middle Ages.
If, upon trying them on, you find the boot too tight or too loose over the instep or shin, the fastening system can be easily individually adjusted. Simply carefully untie the knots on the leather straps that hold the horn buttons to the boot (we recommend using an awl or a thick nail for easier untying of tight knots) and proportionally shorten or lengthen the strap. Thanks to this step, the footwear will fit you absolutely perfectly.
Material, Sole, and Colour Variants
The upper of the footwear is honestly sewn from high-quality cowhide. A major advantage of this model is the thick rubber sole with an anti-slip tread. Although this is a modern element, it radically increases your safety against slipping on wet grass, in mud, or on modern smooth surfaces commonly encountered at today's festivals.
The basic colours the leather is supplied in are black, dark brown, and light brown (natural). Other colour shades are achieved by applying a special topcoat dye. Please keep in mind that this covering layer shares the natural properties of patent leathers – due to the stress and bending of the material, small cracks may form over time, or the coating may crumble locally. For the purposes of weekend historical battles and occasional festivities, however, this finish will serve excellently.
Leather Care and Custom Adjustments
From the factory, the footwear is treated with a beeswax balm that softens, impregnates, and slightly tints the leather to a darker shade. To ensure the leather retains its long lifespan and flexibility, regularly nourish it with available waxes, oils, or standard shoe polish. Shoe polish also allows you to easily cover any scuffs acquired in battle or while marching through the forest. Never dry the footwear near a direct heat source, such as an open fire or a hot radiator, as the leather would irreversibly harden and crack.
If you wear orthotic insoles and choose the custom-made variant, it is absolutely necessary to send these insoles to us in advance. They will be precisely and functionally built directly into the footwear during production, ensuring the boots provide you with the best possible support.
