From the History of the Norman Shield
The shape of this shield, known as a kite shield or almond shield, but most famously as the Norman Shield, was typical for European warriors from the 10th to the 12th century. It was popularized by the Normans during their conquests, including the famous Battle of Hastings in 1066. Its elongated shape offered excellent protection from shoulder to knee, which was especially crucial for cavalry. The pointed bottom protected the rider's exposed left leg. Original shields were made from layered wood covered with leather or canvas.
An Interesting Fact: Heraldic Quartering
The division of the main field into green and white squares is known as quartering, one of the primary methods of combining coats of arms in heraldry. It typically symbolized the union of two families, for instance through marriage, where a husband would incorporate the arms of his wife's family into his own. It could also signify a claim to multiple lordships or territories. Although this shield is an artistic interpretation, the use of quartering lends it historical authenticity and gives the impression that it belonged to a powerful lord with extensive alliances.
