From the History of the Norman Shield
The shape of this shield, known as a kite shield or almond shield, but most famously as the Norman Shield, was typical for European warriors from the 10th to the 12th century. It was popularized by the Normans during their conquests, including the famous Battle of Hastings in 1066. Its elongated shape offered excellent protection from shoulder to knee, which was especially crucial for cavalry. The pointed bottom protected the rider's exposed left leg. Original shields were made from layered wood covered with leather or canvas.
An Interesting Fact: The Symbolism of the Celtic Cross
The Celtic Cross, the central motif of this shield, is an ancient symbol that combines a traditional Christian cross with a circle. The circle is often interpreted as a symbol of the sun, eternity, or God's infinite love. Although it's now inextricably linked with Ireland and Christianity, its roots trace back to pagan times. It stands as a powerful symbol of faith, heritage, and the connection between the spiritual and material worlds.
