Norman Nasal Helm with Decorative Band, 1.6mm Steel

A Symbol of the Early Middle Ages

This Norman helmet is constructed with attention to historical detail. The conical bowl is made of several pieces joined by rivets and reinforced by a lower band. This band is not just functional but also decorative – its vandyked (crenellated) edge is a typical feature that adds to the helmet's aesthetic. The dominant feature is the wide, riveted nasal guard, which provided crucial protection for the face without significantly restricting breathing or vision. The helmet is equipped with an adjustable leather liner for comfortable wear and a leather strap with a buckle for a secure fit under the chin. Thanks to its robust 1.6mm steel construction, it is ideal for re-enactment, LARP, or as the centrepiece of your Norman or Viking warrior costume.

The Legacy of the Normans and Vikings

The nasal helm is an iconic symbol of the Early Middle Ages, inextricably linked with the Normans. We find depictions of it in countless places, but most famously on the celebrated Bayeux Tapestry, which documents the Norman conquest of England, culminating in the Battle of Hastings in 1066. This helmet type evolved from earlier Viking helmets (like the Gjermundbu type) and became the standard head protection for knights and infantry across Europe. The conical shape was designed to effectively deflect sword blows aimed at the head, while the nasal guard protected the nose and centre of the face from direct hits. It was a simple yet extremely effective piece of protection that dominated battlefields for over two centuries.

Please note: This is a replica of historical armour. Although it is made from robust 1.6mm steel and is conditionally battle-ready (from the German "bedingt schaukampftauglich"), it does not offer the standardised protection of modern sports equipment. Its use in re-enactment, combat, or LARP is at your own risk. This is not certified personal protective equipment (PPE) and is not intended for full-contact combat (e.g., HMB, Battle of the Nations).
