Decorative Samurai Sword (Katana) Date with Tokugawa Ieyasu Motifs

Detailed Description of the Sword

This katana is a true work of art, with its individual parts forming a harmonious and visually impressive whole.

The Blade (Nagasa)

The blade is crafted from high-quality AISI 420 stainless steel, ensuring a long-lasting shine and resistance to corrosion. Its surface is adorned with an etched temper line, a so-called false hamon, which mimics the appearance of traditionally forged swords. A unique feature is the two stamped, gold-coloured markings – these are the mon (family crests) of the Tokugawa clan and of Ieyasu himself, one of the most significant shoguns in Japanese history.

The Handle (Tsuka) and Guard (Tsuba)

The handle is cast from synthetic resin in an ivory colour. Its surface is covered with detailed carving that depicts a dramatic scene from a samurai battle. The metal fittings, such as the pommel (kashira), are made of zamak. The round guard (tsuba), also made of zamak, is perforated and features motifs of samurai on the battlefield, stylistically continuing the decoration of the handle.

The Scabbard (Saya) and Accessory Knives

The scabbard is made of lightweight aluminium, and its surface is lacquered in a deep blue with golden splashes. The central part of the scabbard is decorated with a panel showing a battle scene, identical to the motif on the handle. The scabbard is fitted with a blue cotton cord (sageo). It also includes two small accessory knives, Kozuka and Kōgai, housed within the scabbard. Their blades are stainless steel, and their ornate handles are made of zinc.

Use and Inspiration

As this is a decorative replica, the sword is not intended for practical use, such as contact fencing or cutting practice (tameshigiri). Its beauty and historical significance make it perfect as:

  • A stunning decoration for the wall of your living room, office, or den.
  • An exclusive collector's item for lovers of Japanese culture and history.
  • An original accessory for a cosplay costume or LARP (for non-contact roles).
  • An unforgettable gift for anyone fascinated by the world of the samurai.

From the Sword's History: The Legacy of Tokugawa Ieyasu

This katana is inspired by the era and personality of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616), the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan for over 250 years. Ieyasu was a masterful strategist and politician who, after decades of civil war, unified Japan and ushered in a long period of peace and prosperity known as the Edo period. For a samurai, the katana was more than just a weapon – it was the "soul of the samurai" and a symbol of his status, honour, and power. The crests on this sword's blade symbolise the power and authority of this great leader.

Caring for Your Sword

To maintain the sword's beauty for years to come, we recommend following a few simple guidelines. Regularly wipe all parts with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. The stainless steel blade does not require oiling like traditional carbon steel blades, but it is good practice to keep it clean and dry. Avoid using abrasive cleaners that could damage the finish.

Please Note: This is a decorative item. It is not intended for fencing, martial arts training, or any other practical use!
