14th Century Hourglass Gauntlets, 1.6 mm Steel

Detailed Product Description

Construction and Design

These knight's gauntlets are handcrafted from 1.6 mm (16 gauge) mild steel, ensuring excellent durability. The individual overlapping steel plates (lames) that protect the fingers and back of the hand are riveted to a sturdy backing of red-dyed buffalo leather. This system allows for completely natural and unrestricted finger movement, so you can maintain a firm and secure grip on your sword, shield, or other weapons.

A defining feature is the wide, flared cuff that gives the gauntlets their "hourglass" name. This shape not only looks striking but also serves to effectively deflect blows away from the vulnerable wrist without impeding its mobility. The interior of the gauntlets is coated with black anti-corrosion paint.

Comfort and Practicality

For maximum comfort, a soft yet durable inner suede leather glove is hand-stitched into each gauntlet. This prevents chafing from the metal parts and provides a more secure grip. A leather strap with a buckle across the palm ensures the gauntlets stay firmly in place during movement.

A Glimpse into History: The Gauntlets of the Black Prince

Hourglass-style gauntlets became the standard for knights and men-at-arms throughout the 14th century, representing a significant advancement over earlier, more cumbersome mitten gauntlets. Their popularity is well-documented in period art. Very similar gauntlets can be seen on the famous effigy of Edward of Woodstock, known as the Black Prince (1330–1376), in Canterbury Cathedral. They were both a symbol of knightly status and a crucial piece of functional equipment that could mean the difference between life and death in battle.

These gauntlets are a superb addition to your costume for re-enactment, LARP, or as part of your collection of historical armour.

Please Note: This is a replica of historical armour. These gauntlets are not certified personal protective equipment and are not intended for use in full-contact combat sports such as buhurt, Battle of the Nations, etc.

Care Instructions

How to care for your gauntlets?

  • After each use, wipe down the metal parts with a dry, soft cloth to remove sweat and moisture.
  • Regularly apply a light coat of protective oil (such as WD-40 or Ballistol) to all metal surfaces to prevent rust. Pay special attention to joints and rivets.
  • Occasionally treat the leather parts with a leather conditioner to prevent them from drying out and cracking.
  • Store the gauntlets in a dry, low-humidity environment, preferably wrapped in cloth or inside a canvas bag.

What should you avoid?

  • Never leave the gauntlets wet. If they get wet, dry them thoroughly immediately and re-apply oil.
  • Do not expose them to prolonged water or high humidity.
  • Do not use aggressive chemicals or abrasive cleaners that could damage the steel or leather surfaces.
  • Periodically check the tightness of all rivets. Avoid forcing or prying stiff joints.
