Are you preparing to conquer England alongside William the Conqueror, or embarking on a Crusade to the Holy Land? This Norman helmet is an evolution of the classic nasal helmet known from the Bayeux Tapestry. Unlike standard open helmets that typically require a chainmail coif underneath, this model features integrated extended cheek plates and a neck guard. This provides additional protection for your face and neck without the need for heavy layers of extra armour. It is an ideal choice for 11th to 13th-century costumes, LARP, or as a stylish addition to your historical kit. Further product information ...

Norman Nasal Helmet with Neck Guard | Patinated Finish

The Look of a Battle Veteran

The helmet is crafted from mild steel with a thickness of approximately 18 gauge (1.2 mm). However, what makes it visually striking is its finish. The steel is not polished to a mirror shine but features a dark, patinated finish. This gives the helmet a battle-worn appearance, ensuring it doesn't look like a "plastic" prop. The conical shape of the bowl is not just a fashion statement – historically, it served to deflect blows from swords and axes, preventing direct damage to the skull.

Comfort and Usage

Inside the helmet, you will find an adjustable leather liner (suspension system) that ensures a comfortable fit and cushions impacts. The helmet is also equipped with a sturdy chin strap with a buckle, so it stays securely on your head during running or combat. Thanks to its generous circumference (approx. 69 cm / 27 inches), most wearers can fit it even with a thin arming cap.

Safety Warning: Although the helmet is made of steel, the 1.2 mm material thickness places it in Class C of the weapon classification for fencing. This means it is primarily intended as a costume accessory, for LARP (with foam weapons), theatre, or decoration. It is not designed for full-contact combat (buhurt, SCA) with steel weapons, where the material could dent. You can find more about the classification here.

Helmet Care

To prevent rust and keep the liner soft, give the helmet some care:

  • Steel: Wipe the metal dry after every use and oil it (e.g., with WD-40 or gun oil). The patina offers some protection, but it is not rust-proof. Store in a dry place.
  • Leather: Treat the leather parts occasionally with leather conditioner (balm, beeswax) to prevent cracking due to sweat.
