Templar Plate Gauntlets – Knightly Protection from Toledo
A knight's hands are his most important tools – they hold the sword, grip the reins, and take the oath of fealty. If you want your Templar costume or armour collection to look truly complete, these plate gauntlets from the Spanish brand Marto are the right choice. They are a masterpiece of Toledo armoury craftsmanship, combining the functional look of late medieval armour with the iconic symbolism of the Knights Templar. Templar Plate Gauntlets – Knightly Protection from Toledo, Marto
Steel and Gold: The Jewel of Your Armour
These gauntlets belong to the exclusive "Historical Armor Supplements" collection. They are handmade from steel sheet with a thickness of approx. 1.2 mm. Structurally, they are finger gauntlets, where individual finger joints are covered by articulated lames, allowing for hand flexion and gripping a sword hilt (for posing purposes). The long cuff protects the forearm and is decorated with a gold-plated Templar cross and fine chiseling, adding depth and nobility to the armour.
Intended Use and Important Notice
Although the gauntlets look like battle armour, it must be emphasized that they are a strictly decorative item.
- Not suitable for combat: The riveting system and sheet thickness are not designed for strikes from steel or wooden weapons (HEMA, buhurt). Damage to the gauntlets or injury to the hand could occur.
- Usage: They are ideal as a costume accessory for ceremonial occasions, theater, parades, photoshoots, or as a luxury decoration displayed on a shelf next to a helmet and sword.
Historical Context
The original Templars in the 12th and 13th centuries mostly wore mail mittens (attached to the hauberk) with leather palms. Plate gauntlets of this type, which cover each finger individually and have a long cuff, appeared in Europe only in the 14th century. This model is therefore – like the entire Templar plate armour – a beautiful historical stylization that combines the advanced technology of the late Middle Ages with the legendary symbolism of earlier times.

Care and Maintenance
Steel gauntlets require maintenance to prevent rust and maintain articulation:
- Store them in a dry place.
- Regularly wipe them with a cloth and preservation oil (e.g., WD40 or Ballistol), especially after touching with bare hands (human sweat is aggressive).
- Treat any leather parts inside (if straps are present) with leather balm.
